E-P1 owners, your dream lens has arrived
If you own an E-P1, you absolutely owe it to yourself to get this lens right now. I used to own the 17mm and loved its size, but found the image quality lacking. There are plenty of detailed reviews of this 20mm lens out there so I’ll spare the tech details.

I’ve had this for a little over a week and the performance is just amazing. Auto focus speed is very good, not super speedy, but definitely not slow. Images look sharp even wide open with lovely bokeh. It’s not quite as nice as the Panasonic/Leica 25mm 1.4 for 4/3, but it is half the price and 1/4 of the size.

I have some good glass like the Olympus 50mm f2 and Olympus 14-52 mark II 2.8-3.5 via the adapter, but those will probably stay on my E-620 since this Panasonic 20mm fits the E-P1 like a glove.

It’s amazing how this lens makes the E-P1 come alive like no other lens I’ve used on it before.

Great for narrow depth-of-field effect in a compact set
I originally bought the Panasonic Lumix GF1 with the 14-45mm kit lens, and then bought this 20mm pancake.

The pancake turns the GF1 into a really compact set, that I enjoy taking together anywhere. I keep the 20mm lens in the camera most of the times, and only when I know I’ll need some telephoto I replace it by the 14-45mm lens.

I owned previously only point-and-shoot and superzooms, so I wanted to try some DSLR, but I was afraid I wouldn’t take together because of the bulk. With the GF1 + this pancake lens I have a small camera that I don’t mind carrying and that takes DSLR-quality photos.

It lacks OIS, but I don’t really feel the need as this is a very fast lens. With the f/1.7 aperture, you can also create nice narrow depth-of-field effects, which are impossible on point-and-shoot cameras.

I just wanted it be a bit wider… notice that this pancake is actually a 40mm in a 35-mm equivalent focal length. Probably in the future Panasonic will release a wide pancake. They currently sell a wide zoom Panasonic 7-14mm f/4.0 Micro Four Thirds Lens for Panasonic Digital SLR Cameras, but that’s too expensive.

Panasonic has other few lenses, but I believe this pancake 20mm is what makes more sense to use with the GF1 to have a real compact set.

I found this camera bag Lowepro Apex 60 AW (Black) is the smallest to fit only the GF1 + the 20mm pancake lens, if you’re trying to have a real portable set like me, and I also recommend to protect your lens with a filter like this HOYA 46mm UV Filter for Camera Use.

Pros:
- fast f/1.7 lens, great for narrow depth-of-field pictures and low light shots
- fast autofocus
- very compact lens. It makes a lot of sense with the GF1 – as a compact set you’ll carry with you all the time, as it fits your coat pocket.
- compact set = less obtrusive camera = more natural, candid photos

Cons:
- well, it’s not as flexible as a zoom lens. It’s fixed 20mm (40mm equivalent). But the pros outweigh the cons, so you’ll end up using it more than the larger zoom lens.

Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Lens Review
I bought this to supplement the 14-45 Lens which also does very well on my “Lumix G” system cameras. I’ve been using the 20 for a month with great satisfaction. I work commercially with Canon L glass, but, many times out of intrigue, shoot off hours with a number of other systems and therefore have a pretty good idea of their respective strengths and what constitutes good value in the balance of image quality and portability. This lens is a high performer and nicely fulfills its design intentions within the micro 4/3 category.

High quality bag delivers
I bought this to carry two Nikon bodies plus gear, onboard the plane. This is a high quality bag if a little expensive. It holds quite a bit and provides a secure home for your camera investment. One warning about it’s ability to fit in the airplane overhead compartment….you will not be able to use the two flap compartments for anything with any real bulk, like battery chargers etc. That makes the bag too thick to get in an overhead or fit into the sizing racks that most airlines have before you get thru security. I didn’t care for that part very much and I thought that Tenba should have been more forthcoming about it in their “carry on compatible” claims because it diminishes the value of the bag.

That aside, this is a high quality bag and I recommend it.

Tech Talk
Magnification (Power): Riflescopes are often referred to by two numbers separated by an “x”. For example: 4×40. The first number is the power or magnification of the scope. With a “4x”, the object being viewed appears to be four times closer than when seen with the unaided eye.

Objective Lens Size: The second number in the formula (4×40) is the diameter of the objective or front lens. The larger the objective lens, the more light that enters the scope, and the brighter the image.

Great pack!
When I was looking for a camera bag I simply wanted something that I could hike around with and take on a plane. Not only does it work well in both of these situations I am also confident in traveling in crowded places with it since it is only accessible from the side facing your back. Its all weather cover has proven to come in handy while living in the rainy northwest as well. Something else that’s really neat about this backpack is that it can be converted into a normal spacious backpack by removing all the partitions inside. As a side note the partitions feel really strong with a plastic backing inside. Another plus is the easy side access so you can grab your camera quickly.

Things that may bother some people is that it does have a lot of adjustable straps meaning there are a lot (15 or so) of loose straps everywhere. On the plus side to that it is the most comfortable backpack I have owned, but the straps are everywhere. Also the all weather cover is a tight fit and sort of hard to stuff back in its pouch. Lastly the adjustable tripod holder takes some muscle to move since it’s a matter of pushing a Velcro system up and down, but you shouldn’t have to move it more than once unless you have more than 1 tripod…or fishing pole like me .

In conclusion if you are looking for a backpack that you can hike with, carry some extra gear, that’s comfortable and secure, and of course able to pack a camera body and a couple of lenses this is the bag for you. Also, if your looking for more room they come in different sizes I think.

The bag fit all my needs and provided more than I was expecting so I gave it 5/5 stars.

Great backpack!
I was looking for a backpack that would be comfortable for day hikes, carry my d90 with 2-3 lenses and accessories, and with a tripod holder. I also wanted room to carry a light jacket and other non-camera things in the top compartment. Finally, I wanted quick access to my camera without taking the bag off, a pocket for a water bottle and a netbook compartment. This backpack does all of this perfectly! I was initially concerned about the side access pocket and the outer compartment that I use to hold my netbook but they both work great. The quick access door takes a little practice if you want to remove your camera without slinging the bag around but once you get used to it it’s easy to do. The outer compartment is perfect if you have a netbook in a protective sleeve that you want to carry through the airport, etc.

Pros:
- high quality
- current price (vs retail)
- very comfortable
- easy camera access
- tripod holder

Cons:
- quick access too small for camera larger than d90
- could use a couple more pockets inside
- Zippers are high quality but can be a little difficult to zip and unzip

Overall, it’s a great bag that seems to get better the more I use it.

I am incredibly unhappy with this Blu-Ray player.
I had read much about this player on multiple cinema forums for its noted region free capability. All of the claims in the reviews here I tend to agree with as it is a good Blu-Ray player but I have some issues that have been difficult for me to get around.

First, when this Blu-Ray player is playing a disc it emits a high pitched hum that is moderately loud. This hum is incredibly distracting while I am trying to watch films that have quiet moments. If you think that such a hum would disturb your viewing enjoyment, I would strongly discourage you from purchasing this player.

Also, this Blu-Ray player can be rather “moody” as it will sometimes not be able to read a disc on one day, showing an error message, but play it without issue on another. The player will also have some problems reading a disc during playback where a flawless Blu-Ray disc will start skipping or have breaks in playback.

For those of you who are purchasing this player for it’s multi-region ability, an interesting note. This player is not able to play a PAL disc via a HDMI cable where a format error will appear no your HDTV. However, PAL discs will play via component cables without any problems.

I am incredibly unhappy with this Blu-Ray player and would strongly discourage people from purchasing it.

A fine multi-region blu-ray player
*** The Sherwood 5004 is a reliable Blu-Ray player. It performs excellently and is very similar to the Momitsu 899. I have set up my player to take advantage of all BD-Live 2.0 features. I am pleased to report that the player performs these functions very well indeed. It loads and plays BD-Live content much faster than does my older Panasonic BDP-35.

Using the HD Bitstream setting sent through HDMI cables to my Pioneer VSX-91TXH Receiver, I have found Dolby True HD and DTS Master Sound to sound splendid whether the movie/music is encoded at 7.1, 2.0 or 1.0 channels. Immediately prior to the install of the player, I re-calibrated the room and speakers using Pioneer’s built in sound analyzer.

The upconversion of pictures appears to be of a higher quality than my older Panasonic, however, I am not certain I can state the same thing about the Oppo DV-981 and will need to look a while longer. At any rate, the Sherwood certainly loads much faster than the Panasonic. This was examined after I reset the various levels on video display on my Samsung 46″ monitor using two separate video programs.

That said, I heartily recommend the Sherwood, especially given that I have repeatedly switched it from Region A to Region B and back again. The machine handles each very well.

*** Since I wrote this review, an update to the firmware came out. Save yourself the trouble and DO NOT UPLOAD THE NEW FIRMWARE!! It removes the ability of the player to play Region B/C Blu-Rays – the reason I purchased the machine – and renders it a Region A player only. Continue to use it with the original firmware which works just fine.

Noisy Blu-ray player

PROS:
+ blu-rays look awesome and sound great
+ upconverted DVDs look great
+ so far, it’s played all my import different Region DVDs that I have tested.
+ nice slick controller

NEGATIVES:
- as I read previous reviews of a slight buzzing, high pitched sound, my Sherwood does have this sometimes (it comes and goes), but it’s not that annoying.
- when playing dvds, there is a totally annoying chirping sound that pops up within the first hour of play and then eventually goes away. Now that’s pretty annoying. I’m really considering only playing my dvds in my old dvd player.
- Some blu-rays won’t play but will eventually play if you keep trying (For example, GLADIATOR and PONYO didn’t play at first, but the next day, they both played fine. What the hell is wrong with this Blu-ray technology? Why is it so inconsistent?
- the scratching noise when the dvd/blu-ray loads is sort of irritating. As long as that noise is normal, then I’m okay with it.
- it would be nicer if this Blu-ray player came with two HDMI holes, instead of one.

I’ve been spoiled using my totally consistent multi-region Malata player for 8 years, which has never given me one problem. So, I give my Malata player an A, but this Sherwood BDP-5004 gets a B-. I can understand that some blu-rays may or may not work or may or may not work right away, but the sounds that come out of this player is inexcusable. And concerning imports, I don’t trust this technology yet to spend money on Blu-ray imports, especially when some Blu-rays don’t work for technical reasons and also if firmwares are going to prevent import blu-rays from working. So basically, i’m just going to stick with import DVDs and local Blu-rays for now.

performed as advertised
I used this Laminator to preserve large numbers of documents my mom had save from my dad’s records. A previous Laminator had jammed repeatedly and damaged some of my material. This one performed flawlessly. The included free trimmer was useless.

For the price – performs like a real pro. Kind of slow, though.
First things first. This is no speed demon. I was getting one full 8-1/2 x 11 sheet through in just about one minute. If you don’t need a fancy expensive super-wide super-fast 10 mil laminating machine, this is a good unit to consider. I bought this unit, and immediately placed over 300 5 mil laminations in a row through it (with two sheets of paper each) with absolutley no negative operational issues whatsoever. Once, I was stupid and accidentally inserted the lamination crooked, but I was easily able to get it out using the jam-free feature. It takes a while to heat up, but keeps very consistent temperature. I love not having to use a carrier. I’ve used this unit for 3 and 5 mil laminating, and it works great for both. I just wish it had an exit tray to keep things nice and straight as they come out. I still give it 5 stars because of the price to value ratio. All I did was get a ream of paper to use as a landing, and it worked great.

4 stars since I’ve only had it a week. My Mom was the first to fire it up, ran a few sheets with no problems, I ran a few myself and I like it. Beeps on power up and beeps when ready.
